What Religion is Justin Bieber?

Justin Bieber is a devout Christian. He openly talks about his faith, describing himself as a “Jesus guy” who follows the teachings of Christianity.

In 2014 Bieber had a born-again experience and was baptized by Pastor Carl Lentz of Hillsong Church. In 2020 he and his wife Hailey Bieber publicly celebrated their faith with a joint baptism, captioning photos “confessing our love and trust in Jesus”. Bieber often emphasizes that God guides him – he’s said that God is “the reason I’m here”, and that every time he falters “He’s picking us back up every single time”. This personal faith is frequently reflected in his interviews and even in his tattoo art (for example, he sports a cross on his chest and “Jesus” inscriptions).

Early Life

Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, and raised in Stratford by his single mother, Pattie Mallette. Both of his parents were teens when he was born. He attended Stratford’s French immersion elementary schools and a Catholic high school (St. Michael’s Catholic Secondary). Music was a big part of his childhood: he learned piano, drums, guitar and trumpet, and at age 12 performed Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” in a local contest. Pattie posted videos of Justin singing covers on YouTube, and his talent quickly drew attention online. At 13 he was discovered by talent manager Scooter Braun, who helped Justin move to Atlanta to record demo tapes – launching the young singer’s career.

Career Highlights

  • 2009–2011: Debut EP My World (2009) introduced Bieber as a teen idol. His first studio album My World 2.0 (2010) topped the US Billboard 200 chart, making him the youngest male solo artist to do so in nearly 50 years. It featured the smash hit “Baby” (feat. Ludacris). In 2011 he released Under the Mistletoe, the first Christmas album by a male artist to debut at #1.
  • 2012–2014: Bieber’s third album Believe (2012) shifted toward dance-pop and solidified his adult sound. He also collaborated on tracks with other artists and acted in films (see Trivia).
  • 2015–2017: His single “Where Are Ü Now” (a collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo) won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. This success paved the way for his fourth album Purpose (2015), which spawned three consecutive Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits: “Love Yourself,” “Sorry,” and “What Do You Mean?”. Bieber also appeared as a featured artist on DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One” and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” (the latter earned a Latin Grammy).
  • 2020–2021: Bieber’s fifth album Changes (2020) and sixth album Justice (2021) both debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Justice featured the hit single “Peaches” (his seventh U.S. #1) and broke the record for the youngest solo artist to have eight #1 albums. Also in 2021 he scored an eighth U.S. #1 single with “Stay” (with The Kid Laroi).
  • Sales & Records: Justin Bieber is among the world’s best-selling music artists, with over 150 million records sold. He has set numerous chart records (for example, he was the first artist to have five #1 albums by age 18). His collaborators’ hits (like Despacito) have also set streaming milestones on Spotify and elsewhere.

Personal Life

Justin Bieber married model Hailey Baldwin (now Hailey Bieber) in 2018. They had a civil ceremony in New York in 2018 and an official celebration in South Carolina on September 30, 2019. (Bieber had been in a highly publicized on-again/off-again relationship with singer Selena Gomez prior to his marriage.)
